Foundations of Catholic Morality

There is a story told about a searcher who was seeking out spiritual wisdom. He heard about a renowned spiritual Master; he approached one of the Master’s disciples: “What miracles has your Master worked?” He said…”Well, there are miracles and miracles. In your land it is regarded as a miracle if God does someone’s will. In our country it is regarded as a miracle if someone does the will of God.

Christians should live in the land of miracles of the second type: doing the will of God. Doing God’s will is the source of personal holiness and happiness. Christianity is more than a set of beliefs; it is a way of living. Christian faith must result in a life of loving service or it is an empty faith.  When all is said and done, Christian morality is responsibility in love. First, it is a response to God’s freely given love and the gift of salvation offered to us through Jesus Christ. However, salvation is a gift that we cannot earn. We can only accept it and live our lives according to God’s will. Second, Christian morality is the ability to respond to God, the ability to love, the ability to say yes to God. This is also a gift, also freely bestowed on us. It is part of what it means to be a human being.
