The Holy Spirit: The Power of Love

Nobody is able to say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. –1 Corinthians 12:3

Life is full of mystery. The natural world is full of silent, invisible power. The imperceptible power of erosion which was at work for eons carved out the magnificent Grand Canyon. The potency hidden in the acorn causes the inevitable growth of the oak tree. The unseen explosions of nuclear energy in our sun millions of miles away give life to our planet. Hidden, silent, powerful realities lurking in the background account for the wonderful and awesome things we see about us.

God is also actively working in the world, but in a way that is veiled from direct human observation. Christians believe in the active presence of the Holy Spirit whose life-giving friendship works for us until the end of time. The Father and the Son have sent the Spirit—the power of God’s love—to draw us to God. The Spirit transforms our lives from within. The Spirit’s gifts enable us to accomplish God’s saving work for others and the world in which we live. The Spirit is the mystery of God’s love alive in the world.
