The Word of God

The Word of GodIn Christian history, "word of God" is a popular and pious synonym for the Bible. The Catholic Church is careful about the distinction between Christ "the Word of God" and Scripture "the word of God"

"The Christian faith is not a 'religion of the book.' Christianity is the religion of the 'Word' of God, . . . not a written and mute word, but . . . incarnate and living.' If the Scriptures are not to remain a dead letter, Christ, the eternal Word of the living God, must, through the Holy Spirit, 'open our minds to understand the Scriptures'" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 108).

Scripture as the word of God in the words of people is God's gift in the Judeo-Christian tradition, a unique revelation in preserved written form. This unique word of God is recorded in the words of people. This is the Catholic understanding that gives due regard to the human element. The word of God has become a journal (a library, in fact) of God's relationship with Israel and with the early Church.
